A 25-year-old worker at a Pinellas Park steel plant died in an accident this afternoon after a large steel roll fell on and crushed him.
The accident happened at 3:45 p.m. at USP Structural Connectors, at 11910 62nd Ave, according to the Pinellas Park Police Department. The company manufactures steel products for residential and commercial builders.
At the time, Eric Joseph Kanganis of Tarpon Springs was standing on top of a forklift trying to unpack several of the rolls and cut a steel band that had been holding them together, police said. Loosening the band may have caused the roll of steel to spring forward, pinning him to the forklift, a police department spokesman said.
Kanganis worked for USP for three years.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
