CLEARWATER - Temperatures in the low 70s might not be the most ideal beach weather for Florida residents, but fans from LSU and Iowa basked in the sun today during the Outback Bowl's Beach Day.

The fans joined the football teams, marching bands and cheerleaders at the Hilton Clearwater Beach.

The free event included sand sculptures, live bands, skydivers, a tug-of-war, pie eating, trivia and other competitions.

Other activities this week include:

* Battle of the Bands, Tuesday — Join the LSU and Iowa marching bands at Busch Gardens as they square off for a special “Battle of the Bands” performance. Paid admission to the theme park is required.

* New Year's Parade and Pep Rally, Tuesday — The holiday season comes to a close in Ybor City with a parade down Seventh Avenue featuring floats, 15 marching bands, cheerleaders and a “battle of the bands” between LSU and Iowa's marching bands. The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. Pep rally festivities are centered around the Ybor Centro complex.

* Pre Game Bowl Bash, Wednesday — Fans can gather on the south plaza outside Raymond James Stadium where there will be live music, a pep rally, sponsor displays and food and drinks available to purchase in the hours before the 1 p.m. kickoff. The surrounding lots will open for tailgating at 9:30 a.m.

* LSU takes on Iowa in the Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium on New Year's Day.
