CLEARWATER — Two months after pleading to charges he stabbed his ex-girlfriend 32 times, a St. Petersburg man was sentenced to life in prison this evening.
Robert Lee Burton, 22, was charged with attempted first-degree murder in the Jan. 24, 2012 stabbing of his ex-girlfriend Melissa Dohme, 21. It occurred in the 300 block of Glenwood Avenue, just across the street from where she lived with her family.
Dohme described in detail how Burton grew upset upon learning their relationship was over, and how he lured her outside before attacking her. She also described the aftereffects of her injuries, including an eyelid that wouldn’t close, and hands she could no longer use to hold a pencil or a toothbrush.
Dohme is also well known because she fell in love with one of the paramedics, Cameron Hill, who came to her aid. The two are still dating, and he was at her side at Monday’s sentencing.
