Largo bicyclist hospitalized after being struck by pickup

Published:

A 66-year-old bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Monday afternoon when the driver of a pickup veered to the right and struck the bicyclist in Belleair Beach, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Nathan Wright, of Largo, was transported by emergency helicopter to a hospital for treatment after the 3 p.m. crash, the sheriff’s office said.

Wright was heading south on Gulf Boulevard in the bicycle lane. Kelvin Simmerman, 55, of Dunedin, was driving his 2013 GMC pickup, heading south on Gulf Boulevard near Howard Drive, the sheriff’s office said.

Simmerman looked down at a notepad and veered to the right, striking Wright, who was knocked to the ground, the sheriff’s office said.

Simmerman was not injured.

Alcohol and drugs don’t appear to be a factor in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The case remains under investigation.
