A Tierra Verde man was driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than three times the legal limit Monday when he attempted a U-turn that plunked his pickup truck in Tampa Bay, troopers said.

Richard Newhouse, 46, faces charges of driving under the influence with property damage and careless driving after the incident on State Road 679 in Tierra Verde, troopers said.

The Florida Highway Patrol determined Newhouse had a blood-alcohol level of 0.256. A driver in the state is legally intoxicated at 0.08.

About 6 p.m., Newhouse attempted the U-turn in a 2010 Toyota Tacoma, which was heading north on S.R. 679 (Pinellas Bayway), just south of Madonna Boulevard, troopers said.

However, he lost control of the vehicle, which traveled off the road, across a grass shoulder, through a chain-link fence and into the bay near the Tierra Verde Marina Resort, troopers said.

Newhouse, of 370 Pinellas Bayway S., Unit C, was booked Monday night at the Pinellas County Jail and released early Tuesday after posting $500 bond, according to jail records.
