Ex-employee charged in Pinellas Park cash register theft

A St. Petersburg man was charged Thursday after police say he stole a cash register from a Pinellas Park store where he previously worked and threatened store employees and patrons with a knife.

Jett Jones, 29, is being held in Pinellas County Jail on $100,000 bail on charges of armed robbery and armed burglary.

Pinellas Park police say Jones entered the Edible Arrangements store at The Shoppes at Park Place mall, 7060 U.S. Highway 19 N., through a back door and hid on top of a freezer for at least two hours until the store closed.

Believing the store was closed, police say Jones attempted to cut the power cord from the cash register when he was interrupted by a store employee returning from a late delivery.

The employee told Jones to leave, police say, but Jones ran out of the store and fled south on foot while carrying the cash register.

After store employees and mall patrons gave chase, police say Jones threatened a patron with a knife before dropping the cash register and hiding in the rear of a home on 67h Avenue North, police say.

A K-9 unit located Jones, who police say was in possession of a folding knife, and a pair of latex gloves police say were worn by Jones during the burglary were found nearby.

Jones, who police say suffered two puncture wounds to his arm when caught by the K-9 unit, was positively identified by witnesses and taken into custody.

Police say it is unclear why Jones no longer works at the store, where he was though to have been employed during 2013.
