A 57-year-old man was critically injured Wednesday when the SUV he was driving struck a utility pole in St. Petersburg, leaving him entangled in the vehicle.

About 10:50 a.m., St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue responded to the scene at 62nd Avenue and 16th St., N.E., and found a 1995 Jeep Cherokee heavily damaged. St. Petersburg police believe that as the eastbound jeep rounded the curve in the 1500 block of 62nd Avenue NE, the left rear tire failed, sending the SUV into a spin and into the power pole, trapping the driver inside the vehicle.

Rescue crews called in a trauma alert on the driver, Robin Alan Feazell, 5051 Queen St. N., and for an extrication unit to remove him from the vehicle.

A trauma doctor was called to the scene from Bayfront Health Center, who monitored Feazell during the hour-long extrication.

Feazell was eventually removed from the vehicle and flown to Bayfront, where he’s listed in very critical condition. police said.
