Driver arrested in fatal St. Petersburg crash

A driver has been arrested in connection with a June 1 crash that killed a pedestrian in St. Petersburg, the Florida Highway Patrol said today.

Caleb J. Fitgerald, 18, of Gulfport faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and was cited for failure to use due care - special hazards, FHP said.

According to FHP, Ruby Jean Butler, 64, of Tulsa was pushing a small shopping cart across 66th Street North at 42nd Avenue North when she walked in front of and was hit by Fitzgerald’s northbound 2001 Honda Civic.

Butler was thrown into the center lane, where she was struck by a 2006 Ford F150 pickup truck driven by 51-year-old Vicki S. Miller, of Clearwater, the FHP said. She died at the scene.

Fitzgerald initially left the scene of the crash, FHP said, but was stopped shortly afterward and returned to the site.
