A Pinellas County deputy helped an elderly homeowner, who had been sleeping, escape a house fire this morning.

According to St. Petersburg fire officials, Deputy Dan Weber was in the area at the time of the fire and arrived at 6896 16th St. N. just before 9 a.m., ahead of the fire crews.

Weber entered the house, which officials say had heavy black smoke and flames coming from the back, and alerted the occupants about the fire.

The house did not have smoke alarms, officials say.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
