Deputies arrest wanted man after St. Pete standoff

St. Petersburg police safely took an armed burglary suspect into custody Monday night after he barricaded himself in his motel room.

Police say Antwaun Anthony Thompson, 27, who was living at the Landmark Hotel, 1930 Fourth St. N., barricaded himself in his second-floor room when Pinellas County deputies attempted to serve him with four arrest warrants.

As police say deputies approached to arrest him, Thompson sat on the back window sill, possibly to leave the room. He then barricaded himself using couches, chairs and a bed to block the doors.

The motel was evacuated after deputies say Thompson began to break out windows and yell threats to deputies, saying he would not return to prison.

Deputies made telephone contact with Thompson, who said he was armed, and he later threw a semi-automatic handgun out of the window.

After speaking with his mother by telephone, police say Thompson surrendered to deputies without incident.

Thompson was arrested on counts including robbery, burglary, resisting arrest, and a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

No injuries were reported, poilce say.
