CLEARWATER — Firefighters today recovered the body of the 27-year-old Spring Hill man who disappeared in the Sand Key surf Monday.
Boaters on a 31-foot catamaran spotted a body about 4 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico this afternoon. Clearwater Fire & Rescue got the call about 1:43 p.m., according to a department spokesman.
This evening, the fire department announced the body was that of James E. Poindexter, saying clothing and jewelry on the body matched what Poindexter was wearing when he disappeared.
Rescue workers spent about six hours Tuesday and five hours Monday searching for Poindexter, a father of four who vanished 50 feet from shore at Bayside Park on Labor Day.
Poindexter, who can't swim, was with a friend, wading in chest-deep water on a sandbar on the south side of the Clearwater Pass bridge, when he plunged in, apparently thinking the sandbar would quickly re-emerge and he could continue wading, authorities said. But the sandbar didn't continue.
