St. Pete child’s head injury leads to abuse charges

— A 29-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on charges he physically abused his ex-girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, who required surgery for a head injury, St. Petersburg police said.

Stephen Walker was charged with aggravated child abuse. His bond was not available.

Walker had been living with the child and the child’s mother, who Walker used to date, at 1714 11th Ave. N., Apt. A., police spokesman Mike Puetz said.

On May 8, the mother called to check on her son, and Walker told her he had a bump on his head after falling while Walker was preparing to give him a shower, Puetz said. The child was checked out and deemed to be okay.

On May 11, the woman checked in again, and Walker told her the child hit his head while the two were playing a game of “chase,” Puetz said. When the mother got home, she took the boy to All Children’s Hospital.

The boy had a subdural hematoma and required surgery to relieve the pressure in his head and to remove a blood clot, Puetz said. Medical staff and investigators concluded Walker had physically abused him as he was the only person with the boy at the time the boy suffered the injuries, Puetz said.
