Car sideswipes Clearwater house after crash

Two people received minor injuries in a traffic crash this afternoon, and one of the vehicles sideswiped a house, Clearwater Fire & Rescue and the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash took place at 2:33 p.m. when 2008 Kia driven by Howard W. Dippel Jr., 85, of Dunedin was westbound on Lakeview Road approaching Lake Avenue. Meanwhile, a 2004 Toyota driven by Annie Josephine Spellissy, 82, of Belleair was headed southbound and was stopped at a red light on Lake Avenue, troopers said.

When the signal turned green, the Toyota moved forward into the intersection but the Kia didn’t stop for the red light, crashing into the front driver’s side of the Toyota, troopers said.

The Toyota spun and stopped in the intersection. The Kia headed southwest off the roadway and into two yards, hit with several small trees and came to rest against an unoccupied, abandoned home, troopers said.

Firefighters had to stabilize the Kia before they could extricate Dippel, fire officials said.

Dippel was sent to Morton Plant Hospital, while Spelissy was sent to Bayfront Medical Center. Dippel was charged with running a red light, troopers said.

The home did not appear to sustain any damage, fire officials said.
