Clearwater police on Tuesday recovered the body of a man who was believed to have drowned over the weekend.
Police say the body was found about three miles offshore, after Coast Guard officials received a call from the Reel Deal fishing boat just after 7:30 a.m.
Coast Guard crews retrieved the body less than an hour later, police say.
Detectives say the body likely is that of a 40-year-old man who was last seen Sunday around 5 p.m. behind the Holiday Inn Sunspree, 521 S. Gulfview Blvd.
He was there with his cousin and her family when he told her he was going to swim to nearby Shephard’s Beach Resort, police say.
The cousin looked for him Sunday night at 8 at Shephard’s, but could not find him, police say.
Police say he was reported missing Monday night.
The man had been drinking alcohol before he attempted to swim from one hotel to the other, the cousin told police.
An autopsy is being performed to confirm the man’s identity, police say.
