Preseason football clashes with reality programming on CBS on Thursday night when WTSP, Channel 10, pre-empted "Big Brother 13" for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers preseason game with the Washington Redskins.
CBS affiliate WTSP paid for the rights to the preseason game and coverage ran from 7 to 11 p.m. While "Big Brother" is popular, NFL games usually get better ratings and it's the home team.
"This is the only preseason game that will be live and with blackouts it could be awhile before the Bucs are back on TV," says WTSP president and general manager Ken Tonning. "We know that 'Big Brother' has fans but there is a lot of local interest in the Buccaneers."
He says the station asked CBS for other options and times when "Big Brother" could be broadcast but the network has strict guidelines. He said the station had received about six complaint calls as of Thursday morning.
"Big Brother" fans had to wait until 1:37 a.m. to catch a tape-delay of Thursday night's action. And it was supposed to be a big night for "BB" house-member Shelly Moore who is facing eviction. But she appeared to have cut a deal with 26-year-old housemate Rachel Riley to stay on (if Rachel isn't playing her).
Moore, 41, from Ohio, has become unpopular with "BB" followers because she voted to evict fan favorite Jeff Schroeder last week. The tabloid gossip web site TMZ is reporting that her family has been receiving death threats and her employer has been receiving harassing phone calls – demanding the company fire Shelly immediately because of the way she voted on the show.
