Bicyclist critical after St. Pete collision, police say

Published:

A bicyclist is in critical condition after his bicycle was struck by a car Saturday afternoon, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

About 1 p.m., Michael Cavanaugh, 52, was riding a bicycle east on the north sidewalk in the 7800 block of 38th Avenue North in the 7800 block. Police said he apparently suffered a seizure, which sent his bike into the path of a 2003 Buick SUV driven by David Covington, 65,, 2070 Kansas Ave. NE, which was westbound on 38th Avenue North in the curb lane.

Covington tried to change lanes to avoid Cavanaugh, but the front tire of the bicycle struck the front right corner of the Buick, ejecting Cavanaugh from the bike, police said.

Cavanaugh, who was not wearing a helmet, struck his head on the windshield of the Buick and was thrown to the ground. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with a life-threatening head injury, police said.
