A 64-year-old Clearwater man suffered a head injury Tuesday after losing control of his bicycle coming off the Memorial Causeway Bridge, according to Clearwater police.

About 11:42 a.m., David F. Carlivati was riding westbound down the bridge's north sidewalk when it appears he lost control and rode onto the grass, police said.

Then, he fell off of the bike and went several feet before landing on the sidewalk.

Carlivati suffered head injuries, even though he was wearing a helmet, and was flown to Bayfront Medical Center with what appear to be life-threatening injuries, police said.

About 15 minutes later, another bicyclist traveling westbound on the causeway's south sidewalk crashed after apparently losing control as he accelerated going downhill, police said. He suffered a broken bone in an arm and was transported to Largo Medical Center.
