A Zephyrhills man died early Monday morning in a single-vehicle crash when he was ejected from a car that spun out of control and flipped off a Pasco County road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Scott Driggers died in the 3:36 a.m. crash that occurred on County Road 535 just south of Otis Allen Road, FHP said. Driggers, 48, was the passenger in a 2003 Chevrolet Impala driven by Mona Jackson, 42, of Zephyrhills.
Jackson was driving the vehicle as she headed south on County Road 535. She was trying to negotiate a curve when she lost control. The car turned clockwise. Jackson over corrected, causing the Impala to rotate counterclockwise, FHP said.
The Impala traveled to the west shoulder of the road, FHP said. It overturned several times and then the car became airborne.
Driggers, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle, FHP said. The vehicle came to a stop near a fence that was close to the roadway.
Driggers died at the scene of the crash, FHP said.
Jackson and another passenger, Robert Varnadoe, 66, of Zephyrhills, were transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where they are listed in serious condition, FHP said. They were wearing seat belts.
Investigators are trying to determine if the consumption of alcohol affected the driver in the crash.
The case remains under investigation.
