As coaching wrestling goes, it's not a position that Russ Schenk looks forward to. But the Sunlake head coach had no choice Tuesday night when the visiting Mitchell Mustangs squared off with the Seahawks.
Schenk's son, Storm, is a 145-pound wrestler for the Mustangs. It was so difficult for the Sunlake head coach, that he stepped aside and let an assistant do the coaching during Storm's match.
Storm Schenk, only a freshman, won the match 6-3, making it a bittersweet night for his father.
"That's one of my most difficult coaching situations." he said. "This is twice now that my son has wrestled against us, and I tell my wrestlers that I'm going to let my assistant coach. Last time it worked out for us and we won the match, but this time my son was able to pull it out."
The Seahawks, however, were the victorious team 42-34. It was an even match as Sunlake won eight of the 14 matches, but the Seahawks were more efficient at avoiding pins.
Schenk singled out 160 pounder Emanuele Rocco who lost a tough decision, 11-5, to Mitchell's Travis Carr, one of the county's best at 160.
"I tell my guys, sometimes you win when you lose." Schenk said. "The reason we won (Tuesday) is we had guys who lost decisions. Sometimes when you're wrestling a guy that's more experienced than you, if he doesn't pin you then you walk away with a small victory in a way."
Schenk also singled out 182-pounder Austin Lopez. Lopez, who finished third this past weekend in the East Lake Invitational, pinned his Mitchell opponent in just 30 seconds.
"He's been doing a really good job." Schenk said. "He had a really good tournament last weekend going 4-1. He's really improving."
