A 49-year-old woman was killed Saturday night when the Harley-Davidson motorcycle she was a passenger on collided with a car in Pasco County, authorities said.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the 10 p.m. wreck occurred on Rowan Road just north of Massachusetts Avenue in New Port Richey. The 2012 Harley-Davidson was northbound and was approaching a merge of two northbound lanes.
Melanie Gray, 23, of Port Richey, also was northbound in a 2003 Saturn and began to merge into the left lane when the motorcyclist sped up to pass the Saturn, troopers said.
The motorcycle struck the driver’s side mirror and swerved off the road onto the east shoulder.
The 56-year-old motorcycle operator, who was taken to Bayonet Pointe Hospital in serious condition, and passenger were thrown, and the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
Gray was not injured.
The names of the motorcyclist and passenger, both of whom were from Port Richey, were not released Sunday, pending notification of the next of kin, troopers said.
No charges were immediately filed.
