DADE CITY — Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative’s Educational Foundation this year is giving away $950,000 in college scholarships to area high school seniors.
“It will be the largest distribution we’ve ever made,” member relations manager David Lambert said.
The electric utility, which serves most of north Pasco, is a nonprofit cooperative that is owned by its members. The scholarship is available only to dependents of the co-op’s 200,000 members for undergraduate studies.
Lambert said the foundation’s board decided to increase the number of scholarships to 95 and the amount from $8,000 to $10,000. Recipients can collect $1,250 per semester for four years as long as they maintain a C average.
The deadline to apply is March 7, 2014.
Since 1997, the foundation has awarded 1,339 scholarships with a potential pay-out of more than $6.6 million dollars to area high school seniors planning to attend an in-state, accredited college, university, or technical school.
