Two men were arrested late Saturday night and charged with shooting a deer while sitting in a parked SUV on the side of State Road 52 in Dade City.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, Michael Edward McCord, 51, of 19546 Margie Ave. in Spring Hill, was driving a white 1998 Ford Explorer back and fourth on S.R. 52 looking for a deer. About 10:40 p.m., McCord spotted a deer and parked his SUV on the shoulder of S.R. 52, just west of Bellamy Brothers Blvd.

That's when passenger Charles Martin Jones, 54, 4017 Harbor Hills Drive in Largo, used a Ruger shotgun to shoot a young deer from the front passenger seat, according to an arrest report.

The pair left the deer on the side of the road, driving west on 52, then south on Ehren Cutoff, where Jones tossed the shotgun from the car, deputies said.

Jones was charged with three counts of taking wildlife on roads and right of way and was released Sunday on his own recognizance.

McCord was charged with three counts of illegal possession of wildlife, one count of discharging a firearm in a public place, taking wildlife on road/right of way and willful waste of wildlife. He was released Sunday after posting $2,500 bail.
