Special Olympians feel thrill of competition

WESLEY CHAPEL — Special needs students displayed their athletic prowess Friday, participating in bicycle races, foot races, wheelchair races, soccer and other competitions in the East Pasco Special Olympics at Wesley Chapel High School.

The students were from schools in Central and East Pasco. The Special Olympics competition for schools in West Pasco had been scheduled for Thursday at River Ridge High School but was postponed a week because of rainy weather.

Weather was not a problem Friday as the competition unfolded under sunny skies and slightly cool temperatures. Opening ceremonies included a parade of athletes and a torch lighting.

At Special Olympics, coming in first is nice, but it’s not the focus. The Special Olympics motto is: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Volunteers, school staff members and parents cheer on the athletes, providing hugs or high-fives as they finish their heats.
