ZEPHYRHILLS -

A New Year's Day skydiving accident that killed a 60-year-old Gulfport woman is under investigation, the Zephyrhills Police Department reported Tuesday.

The victim was identified as Theresa Elaine McLaughlin, a jumper with about 15 years of experience and 600 to 700 jumps to her credit, Lt. Derek Brewer of the police department said.

The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Skydive City, 4241 Sky Dive Lane.

A preliminary investigation indicated there may have been an equipment malfunction.

"It looks like there was some sort of issue with her chute," Brewer said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner's Office also are involved in the investigation, he said.

An Associated Press report said McLaughlin was a doctor at Suncoast Medical Clinic in St. Petersburg.
