Sheriff: Woman left kids alone in car to hunt hogs

Published:

A 9-year-old boy called 911 today because he was cold after a woman left him and a young girl alone in a vehicle so she could hunt hogs in New Port Richey.

Kayla Marie Shavers, 31 of 9903 Lake Drive, New Port Richey, faces two charges of child neglect, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a 911 call from 12935 Glades Ave. and found a 9-year-old boy and an 8-month-old girl alone in a vehicle, the sheriff’s office said. The vehicle was not running and the temperature was 38 degrees.

The boy, who was wearing a long-sleeve shirt but no coat, said he called 911 because “A police car would be warmer.”

Shavers said she was close enough to the car to respond if there was trouble, but deputies were on scene for 40 minutes before she came out of the woods.

Shavers said she was hunting the hogs because they were tearing up the property, the sheriff’s office said.

She is being held in the Land O’ Lakes jail on $4,000 bond.
