A Seffner man was killed Thursday night when he drove into the back of a tractor-trailer that was stopped due an unrelated traffic backup on Interstate 75 in Pasco County.
The crash and investigations forced the closure of southbound lanes on I-75 in that area for six hours, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
According to the FHP, James Joseph Brennan, 57, was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck southbound on I-75, just south of State Road 52, around 8:30 p.m. when he failed to slow down and collided with the rear of the tractor-trailer.
Brennan died at the scene, the FHP said. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 47-year-old Pradieu Gilles of North Miami Beach, was not injured.
The FHP said Gilles was stopped in the outside lane due a traffic backup from a series of other crashes, including a car that had overturned, and an unrelated crash in which a Pasco County Sheriff’s Department vehicle suffered minor damage after being struck by another car.
No serious injuries occurred as a result of the other crashes on the rain-soaked roadway, the FHP said.
