Sunlake coach Bill Browning knows all too much about how to stop the Wing-T offense heading into tonight's Class 6A-District 6 showdown with Mitchell.
The Seahawks are a week removed from taking on the taxing job of stopping Spring Hill Springstead's spread option attack and now Sunlake has to do it again against a Mitchell squad that rolled up 46 points against River Ridge last Friday. A lack of offensive consistency has been lingering through the first four weeks for the Seahawks and a slew of injuries have ultimately played a huge role.
Six players are out, including starting linemen Ryan Reiss, Zach Kweller, Travis Manecke and running back Ron Richards (11 carries, 136 yards) Browning isn't too worried about whether his team's matchup with Mitchell may decide Sunlake's playoff hopes for 2012, but about fielding a competitive team.
"We're not too worried about the game being a do or die," Browning said. "I'm more worried about putting 11 starters out there on the field for offense and defense. We've done a pretty good job of stopping good running games so Friday night should be an interesting matchup there."
Sunlake (2-1, 0-1) does feature a couple bright spots on offense, though, in quarterback Josh Zifer (215 passing yards, 170 rushing yards) and athlete Eddie Burgos (372 rushing yards, 96 receiving yards), who also doubles up on defense.
