PORT RICHEY -

A new team is on a roll — roller derby, that is, with a benefit Sunday.

The Rolling Valkyries plans its Inaugural Brawl to help the Runaway Alternatives Project House in New Port Richey, organizers said.

Spectators can donate nonperishable food at the event. Canned goods will go to the RAP House, on the grounds of Youth and Family Alternatives on Plathe Road.

The Roller Derby Bout will take place at SpinNations Skating Center, 8345 Congress St., Port Richey. Tailgating starts at 5 p.m. before the bout starts at 6.

The new team is part of Revolution Roller Derby, a women's flat-track roller derby league.

The Rolling Valkyries will take on the world, with roller derby challengers from all over Florida.

Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased on brownpapertickets.com.

For recruits wanting to learn more about the sport, the league also is planning a Roller Derby Fresh Meat Derby 101 introduction from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at SpinNations.

Videos at www.RevolutionRollerDerby.com explain the basic rules. To learn more about joining or volunteering, email RevolutionRollerDerby@gmail.com.
