Two adults were killed when a van carrying youths from the First Baptist Church of New Port Richey overturned and crashed in Lake City on Friday morning.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2000 Ford van driven by Jeff Novak, 52, of New Port Richey, was northbound on Interstate 75 in the center lane when it suffered a tire tread separation. Novak lost control of the van, which went onto the east shoulder and overturned, ejecting some of its occupants.
Novak and passenger Michalanne Salliotte, 44, of New Port Richey, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Three passengers -- Jared Leach, 14, Jacob Newman, 14, and Javen Andrews, 13 -- were transported to UF Health Shands in Gainesville, where Newman was reported in critical condition.
The remaining passengers -- Sherri Paules, 45, Jared Gress, 14, Eric Paules, 12, and Corinn Salliotte, 16 -- were taken to Lake City Medical Center with minor injuries.
The entrance ramp to northbound I-75 from westbound U.S. 90 and two northbound lanes of I-75 were closed for approximately two hours.
