NEED TO KNOW: The Pirates return to the region finals for the first time since 2008, which was the same year they upset Citra North Marion, a team that was ranked No. 1 in the state. However, things are much different, including the names and faces, that is, except for coach Tom McHugh, who has just 10 losses as the Pirates head coach. McHugh has kept this team level headed throughout the season, that, some say, started when Pasco won out the USF 7-on-7 Sling and Shoot back in July. That was the last time the Pirates faced Hillsborough County talent, yet skill players, like Janarion Grant (183 rushing yards against North Marion), David Emmanuel (rushing touchdown) and Trey Dudley-Giles (go-ahead touchdown grab) shine just as bright as those team's stars. With QB Jacob Guy (36 TD passes) at the reins, a defense that is more clutch than it realizes and kicker, Brandon Ray (3 FGs, including 21-yard game winner), who doesn't realize he's a freshman, may want to be the underdog, but will find it hard to sell with a packed-stadium representing Dade City's entire town population. … Since a 14-point loss to Plant, the Tigers have been on a role with a dominant season not too dissimilar to Pasco's. Led by QB Tommy Eveld (19 TDs, 2,145 yards) and RBs Will Lucas (9 TD) and Kevin Newman (15 TD), Jesuit is back in region final after losing to Robinson last season in the 2A region finals. Keep an eye on receiver/return specialist Travis Johnson, who seems to the Tigers' Dudley-Giles and/or Grant. … This is the third postseason meeting between Pasco and Jesuit, splitting the series. However, the Pirates 28-16 win over the Tigers 19 years ago was much more impressive: the 1992 3A state championship.
