Pasco schedules hearings on Common Core standards

Published:

LAND O’ LAKES — The Pasco County school district plans a series of 13 community meetings to educate parents about the Common Core State Standards that have been adopted in Florida

The first meeting will be Jan. 14 at Anclote High School in Holiday.

All meetings are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at each district high school for parents whose children attend the high schools and the elementary and middle schools that feed into them. Those who attend will hear a presentation by district experts, receive materials explaining what the Common Core State Standards are and are not, and participate in a question-and-answer period.

The Florida Board of Education adopted the standards in 2010, and in 2011 schools began implementing curriculum and training teachers to help kindergarten and first grade students master the standards. The standards will be fully implemented in all grades starting with the 2014-2015 school year.

The other community meetings are: Jan. 16 at Pasco High; Jan. 23 at Mitchell High; Jan. 28 at Fivay High; Jan. 30 at Gulf High; Feb. 4 at Wesley Chapel High; Feb. 6 at Land O’ Lakes High; Feb. 11 at Hudson High; Feb. 13 at River Ridge High; Feb. 20 at Zephyrhills High; Feb. 25 at Sunlake High; Feb. 27 at Ridgewood High; and March 4 at Wiregrass Ranch High.
