A Dade City man was arrested Friday and charged with animal fighting charges after numerous chickens and cock-fighting metal spurs were found at his home, according to the Pasco Sheriff's Office.

Deputies used a search warrant at the 36743 Elm Avenue home of Mario Perez Rodriguez, 57, about 2:30 p.m. Friday.

During the search, 55 fighting spurs, eight boxing gloves and multiple roosters and hens were found caged separately in addition to various medications. All of those things indicated an involvement in cock-fighting, according to the arrest report.

There was also cock-fighting videotapes and magazines found inside the home, deputies said.

Rodriguez told deputies he had not participated in cock-fighting since 1992, the report said. An invoice from Belle Farms was found in his name detailing how to administer the medication as well as a training regimen for the birds.

A letter written in Spanish from the Mexico-based company was addressed to Perez, thanking him for being a good customer, according to deputies.

Rodriguez is charged with 63 counts of fighting and battling animals. He remains in the Land O' Lakes Jail with a bond of $315,000.
