A Wesley Chapel man was charged with attempted murder after hitting his girlfriend with his car Sunday morning in Land O’ Lakes according to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.

About midnight Sunday, the man and his girlfriend got into an argument at 6150 Drexel Road in Land O’ Lakes. The dispute involved Clayton Wayne Cody Powell, 20, 6428 Mangrove Drive, Wesley Chapel, his girlfriend, Brandy Butler, and several other people, an arrest report said.

Butler told Powell she didn’t want to leave with him and at some point Powell got into his 1998 Crown Victoria and drove into a parked Ford pickup, deputies said.

Witnesses told deputies Powell drove the Crown Victoria onto the lawn of the home and along Drexel Road several times.

Butler, who was standing in the road, was struck by the car and knocked backwards, deputies said. She hit her head on the pavement and told authorities she believed Powell ran her over on purpose and was trying to kill her, the arrest report said.

After striking Butler, Powell drove back and forth on Drexel Road, swerving in the Crown Victoria toward Butler and the other individuals who were standing around Butler, according to the report.

Butler was transported to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point and was diagnosed with a concussion.

Powell was arrested and charged with a felony count of attempted murder. He remains in the Land O’ Lakes Jail with no bond.
