Pasco firefighters endorse Murphy in District 36 House race

PORT RICHEY — Pasco County firefighters have endorsed Democrat Amanda Murphy over Republican Bill Gunter in the race to replace state Rep. Mike Fasano.

“We know Amanda Murphy will stand up to special interests and make sure the Legislature treats Florida’s firefighters and first responders with respect they deserve,” said Joe Russo, vice president of International Association of Firefighters, Local 4420.

Support among police organizations is split between the two candidates, who face each other Oct. 15 in the District 36 special election.

Gunter has been endorsed by the Florida Police Benevolent Association and the West Central PBA, based in Tampa, and received $500 contributions from each before the primary.

The Pasco County and statewide Fraternal Order of Police have endorsed Murphy.

“Amanda Murphy is the only candidate in the race who understands the tough challenges our law enforcement officers face each and every day while keeping our community safe. She will stand up and fight for law enforcement and Pasco County in Tallahassee,” said James Preston, president of the Florida Fraternal Order of Police.
