A 20-year-old Lutz man died Wednesday morning after his motorcycle collided with a car on State Road 54 in Wesley Chapel, troopers said.
At 7:05 a.m., a 2011 Mazda 2 was traveling east and the 2011 Suzuki GSX-R600 motorcycle ridden by Darren Richard Derby was in the outside westbound lane on State Road 54, both approaching Oakley Boulevard, just west of Interstate 75. the Florida Highway Patrol said
The Mazda, driven by 22-year-old Kayla C. Lancaster, of Wesley Chapel, was attempting to make a left turn onto Oakley, troopers said. Lancaster came to a complete stop and yielded to an oncoming van in the inside westbound lane, troopers said.
As the van passed, Lancaster proceeded to turn but traveled into the path of the motorcycle, which struck the right side of the Mazda, troopers said.
Derby, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected onto the roadway and died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, troopers said.
Lancaster was not injured, according to a highway patrol report.
Charges are pending, according to the report.
