Even before postseason begins, the Saint Leo men's basketball team has accomplished something in the playoffs that none of its predecessors could.
The Lions (15-10, 9-6 Sunshine State Conference) have clinched one of the top four seeds in the SSC tournament, earning the right to host their opening-round playoff game for the first time.
That opponent is still to be determined, but if the playoffs were to begin before today's season finale at Barry, the Lions would host Florida Southern, a team they have beat twice this season.
If they earn the No. 3 seed, they would face the No. 6 seed, which could be Lynn or Nova Southeastern.
Saint Leo is on a six-game winning streak entering today's 4 p.m. game. They defeated NSU 61-49 last Saturday and followed that up with a 58-49 win against Eckerd. Marcus Ruh, the reigning SSC Player of the Week, averaged 18 points.
Pitcher Rick Teasley was named SSC and South Region Pitcher of the Week for the past week after a nine-inning victory against Eckerd.
Teasley, 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA, also is the back-to-back SSC Pitcher of the Week.
The Lions won three games last week, defeating Florida Christian, Clearwater Christian and Warner by a combined 38-10. They played at Florida Christian on Friday, and take on Clearwater Christian Tuesday.
The softball team is playing in the ESPN Citrus Classic this weekend at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista.
They face North Georgia, Flagler, Kentucky State and West Texas A&M.
The Lions (8-6) begin SSC play next weekend.
