LAND O’ LAKES — Even jail inmates aren’t safe from identity theft.

An inmate at the Land O’ Lakes Jail faces fraud charges after he was accused of trying to steal personal identification information from 24 of his fellow inmates, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Brian Michael Chipman, 30, of Port Richey planned to use the information to apply for credit cards, an arrest report said.

Chipman, who has been at the jail since Jan. 30, is being held with bail set at $100,000.

Chipman had a “protective custody” status at the jail and was kept alone in a cell for 23 hours a day, the report said. During the one hour he was outside his cell, he would obtain personal information from other inmates by looking at their legal paperwork or arrest affidavits while they were out of the housing unit or sleeping, the report said.

The latest charges against him were filed Wednesday.
