A farewell roast for retiring County Administrator John Gallagher succeeded in more than just embarrassing its guest of honor.

The $50-a-plate dinner also helped raise nearly $38,000 for the nonprofit Friends of Animal Services. Former Commissioner Michael Cox, who organized the roast, said the revenue is more than enough to pay for the Animal Services department’s new mobile adoption unit.

Cox said there was enough money left over for the nonprofit group to pay for Bordetella vaccinations for each dog at the shelter. Bordetella is commonly referred to as kennel cough.

“We appreciate that so much,” Commissioner Pat Mulieri said. “That’s going to do so much to help with the upper respiratory infections at the shelter.”

Assistant County Administrator Suzanne Salichs said the department is converting a former Pasco County Public Transportation bus into the adoption vehicle. The seats have been removed and the bus will be retrofitted with cages to transport adoptable animals around the county. It should be operational this summer.

Mulieri and Salichs met with animal services officials in Hillsborough and Pinellas this week to observe their mobile adoption units. “Our bus is going to be better than their bus,” Mulieri said.
