DADE CITY — More than 300 diners enjoyed a bowl of homemade tomato bisque and fresh-baked bread at the second annual Empty Bowls Luncheon at the Historic Pasco Courthouse Friday.
“The rain held off, and it was perfect soup weather,” said Jennie Yingling, executive director of the Lacoochee Boys & Girls Club.
The event, sponsored by Feeding America Tampa Bay, benefits the club’s after-school feeding program. Diners paid $10 for a bowl of soup, a sourdough roll from Panera and a slice of kumquat refrigerator pie. They also got a ceramic bowl crafted by one of the children from the club.
Last year’s inaugural luncheon generated enough revenue to keep the program running for a full year. “We haven’t finished counting everything, but I know we beat last year’s total,” Yingling said.
The kids were in school and missed the luncheon, but they still enjoyed soup and pie at the Boys & Girls Club Friday afternoon, Yingling said. “They got to enjoy an Empty Bowl meal.”
