Four people were killed and one person seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash in Pasco County Sunday.
The wreck happened at 5:45 p.m. on U.S. 41 at Parsley Lane, in the north-central part of the county, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A southbound 1998 Volkswagen driven by Edith Busto, 60, of Tampa, passed a 2004 Toyota that was also heading south in a no-passing zone along the two-lane highway, the FHP reported. The cars were near a railroad crossing, and there was a light rain.
When Busto pulled back into the southbound lane, she lost control of the car on the wet road, and the car spun into the northbound lane, where it hit a 1995 Ford, driven by Joe Wayne McBroom, 42, of Hudson.
Then McBroom crashed into Busto, and both cars wound up in the center of the road, on the railroad tracks, according to an FHP report.
The crash killed Busto, along with two of her passengers: Juan M. Alas, 63, of Tampa; and Carmen Rosa Gomez-Lopez, 49, of Tampa. A third passenger – 48-year-old Jorge Luis Busto Almarales of Tampa – was airlifted to Bayonet Point Hospital in serious condition. All three passengers were ejected in the crash, according to the FHP.
Wayne was also killed in the crash, but none of the four people in the Toyota were hurt, the FHP reported. Loi Dac Ho, 28, of Tampa was driving; and the passengers included Hoa Le, 65, of Tampa; 5-year-old Andrew Nguyen, of Tampa, and 11-year-old Daniel Nguyen, of Tampa.
