Food donations erase library fines till Dec. 20

DADE CITY — Those who are notoriously late in returning books and other items to the library are off the hook.

Between now and Dec. 20, patrons who bring nonperishable food to any Pasco County library will have fees and fines waived for items — including books, CDs and DVDs — that are late or have been lost.

That also includes the City of Zephyrhills library.

County commissioners passed Resolution 1427, also called the Pasco County Library Amnesty Event, last week.

Tardy cardholders also can pay replacement costs for lost items without facing additional fines.

The event is a collaboration between the Pasco County Library Cooperative and Suncoast Harvest Food Bank.

The donated food will be taken to the Suncoast Harvest Food Bank, Inc. in Land O’ Lakes to give to those in need this holiday season.

“I’d just like to thank the board for the opportunity to do something like this,” said Kevin Griffith, an administrator for the county’s library system and a member of Library Leadership Team. “We really appreciate it.”

Before Griffith stepped away from the podium during the commission meeting, board Chairman Jack Mariano didn’t miss a beat.

“My daughter should be in to see you soon,” Mariano said, drawing laughter from the crowded commission chambers in the Historic Pasco County Courthouse.
