A convicted felon was arrested Tuesday in Land O’ Lakes, following a brief car chase, after it was determined he was in possession of a handgun, according to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.
Timothy Destino, 26, 21547 Southwood Dr., Land O’ Lakes, was arrested and charged with felon in possession of a firearm and driving with a suspended license.
About 3:30 p.m. neighbors in the area of Henley Road and Valdez Lane reported hearing close to 20 gunshots.
When a deputy arrived, a white Saturn was seen leaving the area, driven by a man later identified as Destino. His girlfriend was in the passenger seat. The Saturn, which had an expired tag, sped away and ran a stop sign in an attempt to escape, according to the arrest report.
Once stopped, Destino was taken into custody and the vehicle was impounded. A search of the Saturn turned up a loaded Ruger 9MM handgun, two boxes of ammunition, and an extra magazine for the gun under the passenger seat, deputies said. A black backpack in the back seat was found with eye and ear protection as well as targets, deputies said.
Destino told deputies he was teaching his girlfriend how to unload and clean the gun, deputies said. Destino also told deputies his civil rights to bear arms was not re-instated, the report said.
He was arrested in Hillsborough County in 2007 for trafficking illegal drugs, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, delivery of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and petit theft. Following a conviction, Destino spent just over two years in prison and was released in December 2010.
Destino remains in the Land O’ Lakes Jail with a $10,000 bond.
