Deputies: Robbery suspect holds Pasco man against his will to avoid capture

A Plant City man was arrested Tuesday morning after robbing a Dade City business at gunpoint Monday night and later holding a man against his will, according to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.

Reginald Lynn Gaines Jr., 23, 1203 Goldfinch Drive, is charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, burglary with assault or battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, aggravated battery, burglary of an automobile, loitering or prowling, and resisting arrest without violence.

About 9:30 p.m., Gaines and two others entered Food Mart, 37330 Lock Street in Dade City. The store manager said all three men wore bandannas over their face and were armed, one with a shotgun and two with handguns, and robbed the business.

Because the manager could not open the cash register, he handed the men a brown bag with $1,000 in cash, according to an arrest report.

Gaines told deputies he was armed with a shotgun and hit the manager before the trio left the store, the report said.

The following morning, Dade City police began receiving calls from a neighborhood on Church Street about prowlers in the area. More calls led investigators to a home on Jefferson Avenue.

When authorities arrived at the home, about 7:45 a.m., an empty van with its door open was spotted in the driveway. The Dade City police officer then heard a commotion inside the house.

Several people ran out of the house, including a man who said Gaines opened the driver’s side door of the van and placed him in a headlock, forcing him into the house, the report said.

While inside the home in the 3600 block of Jefferson Avenue, Gaines held the man in a choke hold and told him he would break his neck if he answered the door for investigators, the report said.

The man eventually got out of the house and Gaines hid in a back bathroom, the report said.

A K-9 was sent inside the house and deputies arrested Gaines at 9:30 a.m. He remains in the Land O’ Lakes Jail with a bond of $325,450. No other arrests were reported.
