A New Port Richey man was arrested and charged with aggravated battery after the Pasco Sheriff’s Office said he hit his wife twice with a hammer.
Just before 9 a.m. Saturday, David Scott Laurenti, 35, and his wife were in their Betula Drive home when they began to argue.
Laurenti told deputies the dispute began when he tried to pick up and play with their 1-year-old son as his wife was feeding the baby.
The two were arguing in the living room when Laurenti went inside the garage and retrieved a yellow work hammer and began swinging it wildly, the arrest report stated.
As his wife attempted to walk away, her husband struck her in the lower back with the hammer, deputies said.
That blow caused a minor abrasion.
During the argument, Laurenti is accused of snatching his wife’s cellphone, throwing it to the floor and breaking it.
When his wife asked to use his phone to call a friend so she could leave the home, Laurenti grabbed her by the hair, the report stated.
He struck her a second time in the hand, causing a 1-inch cut, deputies said.
Laurenti’s wife told authorities she armed herself with a pair of scissors and slashed her husband to break free from him.
Laurenti was cut on the elbow and had a puncture wound to his chest, the report stated.
Laurenti was released from the Land O’ Lakes Jail on Sunday after posting $500 bail.
