A Lutz couple was arrested Saturday morning and charged with child neglect at a home deputies described as filthy, reeking of animal urine, and with prescription drugs within reach of their toddler, according to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.
James Gregory Cole Jr., 33, and Deadra Rene Willis, 38, both of 1124 Foxwood Drive, were charged with child neglect.
Deputies were called to the home about 7 a.m. Saturday in response to a shotgun being fired by Cole in the couple’s backyard, according to an arrest report.
While Cole was shooting the shotgun outside, the couple’s 2-year-old son was in a playpen in his room, the report said. A deputy, who went inside the house, described it as “deplorable.”
Cat and dog feces were found on the carpet and walls of the living room, master bedroom, child’s bedroom, and in the hallway, the deputy said. The child’s playpen also smelled of animal urine. The report did not specify how many pets the couple owns.
Multiple bottles of prescription pills were found on the coffee table in the living room, on a low shelf, accessible to the toddler, deputies said. An open bottle of Advil was found on the coffee table, the report said. A wooden box containing drug paraphernalia was also found, deputies said.
The refrigerator inside the home contained rotten food, while cigarette butts, clothes, blankets, empty bottles, food containers, and other items were scattered on the home’s floor, according to the deputy.
The child was taken from the home by child protective services. Willis was released from the Land O’ Lakes Jail on Saturday after posting a $5,000 bond.
Cole, who was also charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine, was released Sunday after positing a $10,300 bond.
