NEW PORT RICHEY -

Nearly 600 children and their parents flocked to the recent Curious George Bike Rides Day on trails at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park.

Curious George, a popular children’s book character, greeted the children.

The event emphasized that fun and exercise go together, said Alex Fasano of the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department.

Zilha Combs of Port Richey brought her three sons. Aiden, 5, and Caleb, 2, pedaled their tricycles while she pushed the stroller with 6-month-old Evan. They joined crowds streaming along scenic park trails through the woods.

Children sang along as entertainer Shana Banana performed fun songs such as “Let’s Go Bananas.”

Thanks to the Safe Routes to School Program, Ruth Wilson, 7, was among the children fitted with bicycle helmets. Jana Mulholland from All Children’s Outpatient Center Pasco in New Port Richey made sure the helmets fit snugly and comfortably.

At the park’s Environmental Center, a bike rodeo, cooking demonstrations, children identification and other events took place, Fasano said. Gearlink Racing staff provided some bike tune-ups.
