ZEPHYRHILLS — Zephyrhills Mayor Danny Burgess, a candidate for state House District 38, held his first fundraising dinner in Zephyrhills last Wednesday at the Abbott Station Restaurant.
The $100 a plate dinner was attended by more than 60 mostly local family, friends and supporters of the mayor. Burgess decided not to run for a second term so that he could pursue the District 38 seat, now held by House Speaker Will Weatherford.
The honorary hosts of the dinner were state Sens. John Legg and Wilton Simpson, Tax Collector Mike Fasano, Property Appraiser Mike Wells and Zephyrhills City Attorney Joseph Poblick.
An ice sculpture by Russell Samson that encased a Burgess campaign poster was featured among the hors d’oeuvres.
Jeff and Kristin Meserve, owners of Abbott Station Restaurant, 5327 Gall Blvd., approached Burgess about having the fundraiser.
“It’s so humbling to have so many in the community supporting you,” Burgess, a Zephyrhills native, said. “This is truly a grass-roots campaign and that was 100 percent local support.”
Burgess faces Minerva Diaz in the August Republican primary, with the winner facing Democrat Beverly Anne Ledbetter in November.
