The 24 boats in the Ed Alber Tarpon Rodeo, a fundraiser for Tampa Bay Watch, found tough fishing last weekend because of strong winds. But captain Justin Moore, guiding Tampa residents Bill Blanchard, Brightman Logan Sr., Brightman Logan Jr. and Lowe Morrison, managed to bring three fish to the boat to win the event.
Blanchard said the first fish, about 120 pounds, was caught in the channel near Bean Point. The second fish, caught near Longboat Pass, was estimated at about 150, and the third, larger than the second, was caught behind Egmont Key near the channel with minutes to spare. All were released.
Moore fished with heavy spinning gear and braided lines, using threadfins and pass crabs as bait. The team donated its $3,000 winnings to the tournament. Moore, son of well-known guide Scott Moore, also would have won last year's event, but he arrived late to check-in.
