WESTCHASE — A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday will mark the opening of a 10,000-square-foot gymnasium at the Westchase Recreation Center.

Construction of the $2 million project took 14 months.

The addition is designed to accommodate basketball, volleyball and other organized indoor activities, and will allow the county to expand its after-school and summer programs at Westchase Park.

Those youth programs reached capacity of 450 soon after Westchase Park opened in 2005. The long-awaited gymnasium was added to the Hillsborough County budget in 2008.

County commissioners and members of the community are scheduled to participate in the 4 p.m. ribbon-cutting at the recreation center at 9791 Westchase Drive, off Linebaugh Avenue and bordering Westchase Elementary School.

The project, which was completed on schedule, was funded with Community Investment Tax revenues.
