TAMPA – Most golfers have at least tried other sports. And as many know, golf can be a lonely game, especially when it isn’t going well. Sometimes, a teammate is a good person to have around.
Nick Ramsey, assistant golf professional at Wentworth Golf Club, is the exception. Golf is all he ever wanted to play. Growing up in the cold of Wisconsin, he fell in love with the warm weather sport the first time he tried it and has never lost his love for the game.
“It’s the only sport I ever played,” Ramsey said. “The first time I hit a golf ball I always wanted to be better, but I also knew I wanted to teach and be involved with working with younger players.”
Since Wisconsin is not exactly a year-round haven for golf, Ramsey would spend time in Florida and Arizona so he could play the game he loved all the time.
He knew he wanted to be a golf teacher, but that isn’t as easy as it sounds. It involves a heavy curriculum and several stages must be reached to make it to the title of PGA professional.
But Ramsey had it in him. He entered the PGA apprenticeship program, a grueling program that requires studying in more than 20 different facets of the business of golf, everything from horticulture to banquet management to simply teaching the game. It’s a tough road to earn certification, but Ramsey’s love of the game kept him going.
“I knew I couldn’t make it on the PGA Tour, but I wanted to teach,” Ramsey said.
Not to say that he doesn’t occasionally play in some sectional tournaments, which are prevalent throughout the Southeast. But as a teacher, he doesn’t get as much time as he’d like to play, but he understands that it comes with the territory.
“I still have the potential to be a scratch golfer,” Ramsey said. “Being a teaching pro makes it tough, but I still have a decent game.”
However, his teaching methods aren’t standard.
“I teach golfers to play the game backward,” Ramsey said. “The most important thing is to get the ball into the hole. You have to have a short game and that’s more important than hitting it off the tee. Play the holes backward.”
When Ramsey is teaching kids, he understands their desire to hit the ball hard and long. So he compromises.
“I try to teach the whole game, but at the end of the lessons, I just let them hit it. If they aren’t having fun, they won’t want to come back.”
